Abstract

History is an academic discipline and a cultural tool that plays a fundamental role in shaping the memories and identities of societies around the world. Thus, in this article we aim to denounce the process of erasure of people with disabilities in the figure of D. João VI, who was deaf, in textbooks. We present a research with a qualitative and quantitative approach in data platforms and a bibliographic review in a narrative form. The data collected in the research platforms and bibliographic review demonstrate that the topic of D. João VI's deafness is rarely addressed and when mentioned, it is often treated superficially and without due importance. We conclude that this contributes to the perpetuation of stereotypes and prejudices in relation to people with disabilities, in addition to reinforcing the invisibility of their historical contributions. We highlight the importance of raising awareness about diversity and the need to overcome the erasure of people with disabilities, valuing their participation and contribution to society.
