Abstract

Este artigo investiga o caso de Singapura, onde sindicatos docentes existem, mas mobilizações da classe são raras. Questionamos por que e como a mobilização de educadores/as, guiada pelo Sindicato dos/das Professores/as de Singapura – STU (sigla em inglês), se transformou. Nossas conclusões mostram que dinâmicas históricas, políticas e socioeconômicas influenciaram esta transformação. Por mais de setenta anos, o STU foi defensor, apoiador e porta-voz de docentes de Singapura por meio do sindicalismo trabalhista, profissional e social. Argumentamos que o legado das lutas do STU — ao longo de sua relação conflituosa com o governo colonial e sua relação colaborativa com o governo local — lançou as bases para o aperfeiçoamento de professores/as e a alta qualidade da educação pela qual o país é reconhecido atualmente mundo afora. Entretanto, questões residuais relacionadas ao bem-estar docente, devidas às altas expectativas em relação aos/às professores/as e ao ensino, apontam a necessidade de revisão dessa relação entre Estado e trabalhadores/as.
